Covenant University Will Be Among World’s Top 10 By 2022 - Oyedepo

Covenant University Will Be Among World’s Top 10 By 2022 - Oyedepo
The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Dr David Oyedepo, said on Monday that the institution would be among the top 10 universities in the world by 2022. Oyedepo made the remark at the institution’s 11th Founder’s Day celebration in Ota. According to him, the university has since inception in 2002, focused on actualising its mandate, which is primarily to raise leaders who will change the world. Oyedepo said that already, the university had surpassed set standards but was not relenting till it achieved its desired 2022 dream, tagged: Vision 10: 2022, (1 of 10 in 10). “It is in view of this that we are launching our new vision and, therefore want to charge the faculty managements to invest maximally in the review of our curriculum. “We must strive to review pragmatically, the contents of our curriculum by bringing it into the realities of the day. “Let us not be afraid of trying out new things in new ways because unless this is done, you cannot move forward. “We must strive to have the creative mind of Christ to review our curriculum in order to truly meet the needs of the society,” he said. The Chancellor said that empowering the people intellectually and practicalising it through inventions and discoveries was key in taking universities to higher levels. He charged the students to be excellent performers, especially in the area of self-discipline, as it was a major tool in becoming great leaders. The chancellor later inaugurated projects in the institution, among which was the vision 10:2022 (1 of 10 in 10) billboard. He also inaugurated the glass blowing laboratory at the chemistry department of the institution as part of activities lined up for the celebration. The laboratory is meant for fabricating, moulding and re-moulding of glass. The Head of Department of Chemistry, Dr Kolawale Ajanaku, said that the laboratory would enable students to turn waste to wealth by picking up broken glasses and putting them into use. He said that the laboratory would not serve the students alone but would be open to members of the public for training. Covenant University, which was established on Oct. 21, 2002, has graduated more than 10, 000 students.

Nigeria won’t break, Bishop Oyedepo predicts

Nigeria won’t break, Bishop Oyedepo predicts
THE Chancellor of Covenant University, Bishop David Oyedepo, has called on Nigerians to join in the task of building a united country, predicting that it will not break. Bishop Oyedepo made the call Monday when he paid a courtesy visit to Akwa Ibom State governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, at the Governor’s Office, Uyo, saying, “I think Nigeria is advanced enough to be able to put things together to help the masses get educated depth of enlightenment, see hope on their future and see opportunities in this nation.” According to him, “once again, we are all Nigerians, this is our nation. We have no other nation. Let’s help to build and not be part of those who want to break it. We will build this nation and it shall not break. “A lot of us have opportunity to leave outside this country forever, but because of our parents and relations, we can’t go anywhere. God forbid there is any war in Nigeria. There are some that don’t know anywhere. They don’t have understanding of how to get to anywhere and yet they are citizens of our nation,” he remarked. Oyedepo, who is also the General Overseer of Living Faith Church, Winners Chapel, urged the media to foster unity, noting that “I believe the media have a lot to do in helping to show the way forward.” A lot of our young men are lost in Europe, America and China just because there is not enough information going out there to show them they can make things happen here. I want to admonish that you help people to see their future. He expressed the hope that the media would rise to its responsibilities by educating the masses on “the unlimited opportunities available to us in our nation and help to motivate them to become contributors while they engage in constructive journalism and help to see people find their footings in our great nation”. Expressing hope that there is a great future with the current development in the State, the man of God declared “I am impressed today. I was here some years ago. I came here through the airport I have seen the roads and everything, I believe there is a great future”. Governor Akpabio commended Bishop Oyedepo for his humility and for the exploits God has used him to wrought, noting “We thank you for your humility. We will like to have a strong relationship with you. “There is something that could interest you and that is the aspect of the fact that we start the year with God in Akwa Ibom by doing a major inter-denominational service every year in January. We have done that consistently for over six years and when we do so I know that the blessings of God are always upon the State”, Akpabio recalled. The Governor who invited the Bishop to the 2013 Akwa Ibom Christmas Carol Night observed “In between, we also have a lot of thanksgiving services and we have the State creation day in September, where we also presented the State to God in a solemn assembly. We also end the year with God. In December, we chose a day and we have a major choral festival for God. We had the privilege of having Pastor Kumuyi, who presided over the assembly in 2011 and Pastor Enoch Adeboye in 2012. There is no way a State like ours that is named after God will not like to identify with a Man God of your status.

Kenyan Pastors Protest Pay-to-Preach Laws, As cleric charges members $10 to check their names in God’s ‘Book of Life’

Kenyan Pastors Protest Pay-to-Preach Laws, As cleric charges members $10 to check their names in God’s ‘Book of Life’
Hundreds of pastors in Central Kenya confronted a county governor last week to protest against a new bill that could see clergy charged for preaching outside of their churches. The pastors, who say they represent as many as 1,200 churches within Nyeri County, marched to the governor’s office on Feb. 12 to protest against the Nyeri County Finance Bill, which includes a section on charging preachers for speaking in public. The bill, which is yet to be debated by the local government or signed by the county governor, states that clergy must pay 10,000 Kenyan Shillings (approx. €85) per day to preach inside a stadium, 8,000 KES (€68) outside a stadium and 5,000 (€42) in rural areas. Charles Muchiri, priest of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ruiru, near Nairobi, and chairman of the 300 pastors, said that churches should not be commercialised and treated like businesses, and that the bill would leave clergy dependent upon funds to reach beyond their churches. “The services rendered by the church to the people are free and such a high tax imposition will greatly affect the spreading of the gospel,” he said. IN Kenya, it is common for churches to hold evangelical events in stadiums that can last from three days to a full week. The Nyeri governor, Nderitu Gachagua, was out of office on the day of the protest, but the bishops were addressed by Finance Executive Martin Wamwea, who promised a response from the County Assembly Finance Committee within seven working days. Nyeri is not the first of Kenya’s 47 counties to consider such measures. Nairobi County proposed a similar law last year that would charge clergy for the use of public parks. The two largest parks in Kenya’s capital, Uhuru and Kamukunji, are popular venues for evangelical meetings. But under the proposed law churches could be forced to pay 50,000 KES (€423) per day to preach from the main stand or 40,000 KES (€338) elsewhere in the park. Under Nairobi’s proposed bill, street evangelists would also be forced to pay 2,500 (€21) to preach. Similar proposals were made in Busia County in Western Kenya, but the bill was dropped after protests from clergy. Recent reports claimed that one pastor had been charging 1,500 KES (€13) for the promise of salvation, while another reportedly sold holy oil for money. Christians in Kenya are divided on the issue. Some argue that it is wrong to charge preachers, but others say clerics should pay the fees, a view that is bolstered by reports that clergy have been exploiting their positions to make money. Meanwhile, a controversial Christian pastor in Kenya, which UNICEF lists as among the 30 poorest countries in the world and where more than 25 percent of the population live on less than $1 a day, has been charging his faithful congregants more than $10 each to tell them if they will be allowed into heaven. According to a report from The Nairobian, the televangelist, Bishop Thomas Wahome of Helicopter of Christ Church, began charging members of his congregation about 1,000 Kenyan shillings or just over $10 to tell them if their names are written in the Book of Life. In Christianity, the Book of Life is where God records the name of all people who are destined for heaven. Wahome, whose followers have branded him a prophet, believe he has been granted special access to the pages of God’s book and have reportedly been turning to him to check on their heavenly status. “I am shocked. My friends told me their names are in the Book of Life and I should also go to check if I will be allowed into Heaven,” Sheila Mbaya, a married mother of one, told The Nairobian. The publication called Wahome’s ministry to verify Mbaya’s claim and a woman identified as Pastor Salome confirmed that it would cost $1,100 Kenyan Shillings to check the Book of Life. “Send the money to this number, 07XX032000 (number concealed) and then come tomorrow at around 10 in the morning. The bishop will then tell you if your name is in the Book of Life,” she said. This isn’t the first time Wahome has peddled supernatural promises to his poverty-stricken followers. Last year, the televangelist told his followers they could be healed from ailments by touching his clothes like the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:21-34. He told them, however, that a touch of his clothes would come at a cost of 1,200 Kenyan Shillings.
